I wonder if anyone can suggest some ideas to encourage my two year old son to chew finger foods.Leon has Lissencephaly and schizencephaly. He can' t hold things yet and tends to panic and end up choking on lumps of anything that I put in his mouth He will tolerate a chocolate button but lets it melt before swallowing.Mealtimes are not too difficult as he will take lumpy foods such as pasta or beans,so long as they are in a sauce .I have tried bread, banana, boiled potato, wotsits, rusks etc. Do I need to just persevere as his therapists recommend and risk choking or leave it for a while longer? His weight and general health are fine, just a little reflux after meals.
Also just to complicate matters we are vegetarian!
Any ideas will be very appreciated.

My daughter is 11 and will still not tolerate lumps unless they are in sauce. Things like bananas I mix with yoghurts. Although she is able to chew, she doesnt like anything too hard or dry - she will either spit them out or not chew them properly and end up being sick, either immediately or some hours later. She will also not have any finger food. We have got used to what she will and wont eat and gave up long ago trying to ween her onto the "tough stuff". We are just happy that she is able to have a balanced diet and is putting on weight. It maybe that your child will be the same - as long as he is happy with what he's getting and is thriving on it I dont think theres too much to worry about.

Thanks Andrea for that.I suppose that if I looked at his progress with feeding in comparison to his general development he is actually doing very well. I always imagine though that if I can get him excited about foods it will help his general handling skills,(if he can hold a breadstick then he could also hold a rattle) Perhaps I'll ease off for a while and let him enjoy his food again! Thanks again for your reply!
